Samuel E. "Bud" Palmer, age 94, of McHenry, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 5, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Chicago, IL on April 22, 1923 to Samuel E. and Lee (Ahls) Palmer of Hinsdale. He was raised alongside his sister Mary Lee and brother Briggs Smythe and went to Hinsdale High School. Sam graduated from St. John's Military Academy and then attended the Citadel Military College in South Carolina, allowing him to enlist at the Officer rank in the United States Air Force in 1944. During World War II, Sam was a decorated pilot who flew a B-25 Bomber in the 345th Bombardment Group "Air Apaches" and served his country for 23 missions. After the war ended, Sam graduated from Miami University's School of Business Administration. He then married the love of his life, Constance Sweeny, on September 1, 1960 and adopted her daughter, Diane. Sam was a paper broker by trade and went on to own his own paper company, Oaklawn Paper Company. A hardworking man, he did not retire until well into his 80s. Sam was also a 32nd Master Mason and a Shriner. He was also an avid golfer. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Connie; his dear daughter, Diane (Frank) Calabrese; his treasured grandchildren, Frank E. Calabrese and Stevie Calabrese; his sister-in-law, Amy M. (the late Briggs) Palmer; four nephews, Reed (Teresa) Collingwood, Briggs (Peggy), Gregory (Ann Marie), and David (Kimberly) Palmer; a niece, Susan Preihs; and many great nieces and nephews: Kristen Preihs, Nichole and Robert Collingwood, and Christofer, Jordan, Helen, John, Katharine and Briggs Palmer. In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lee, and his brother, Briggs. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Pets for Vets of Chicagoland at 6642 W. Wyandot Dr., Palos Heights, IL 60463 or Leader Dogs for the Blind at 1039 S. Rochester Rd., Rochester Hills, MI 48307, or to JourneyCare Foundation, 2050 Claire Court, Glenview, IL 60025. A memorial gathering will be held from 1 p.m. until the 3 p.m. service, Saturday, August 12, 2017, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry, IL 60050.
