Bruce Brummond died peacefully on April 13, 2018, in Barrington, IL, at the age of 100. Bruce was a father and a husband, and he was very active in veterans' affairs.
Bruce was born on September 7, 1917, in Buffalo Lake, Renville County, Minnesota to Henry and Kathryn Brummond. Originally christened Winton Bruce, he dropped his first name in his early years. He grew up in Renville County and in nearby Hutchinson. Bruce graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1935.
On February 16, 1942, he married Mary Waldron at St. George's Catholic Church, Glencoe, MN. After marriage, he lived with his family in Hutchinson and Glencoe, MN; Belle Fourche, SD; Sparta, WI; Lake Zurich and Crystal Lake, IL. He was a manager of various shoe and clothing stores and was a long time employee of the Footwear Division of the B.F Goodrich Company. Bruce enjoyed stamp collecting, gardening, and being with family. He impressed many with a pleasant personality that he shared with all.
Bruce served in World War II enlisting in 1942. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge on December 20, 1944, in Echternach, Luxembourg. Incarcerated as a prisoner-of-war, he was liberated by British troops in May, 1945.
Active in various veteran's groups, Bruce was a member of: American Ex-Prisoners of War, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Forty and Eight (La Societe Des 40 Hommes et 8 Chevauk), and The Fountains (Crystal Lake, IL) Veterans Club. He also was active in speaking to various groups about his experiences in World War II.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary J. (nee Waldron); his parents, Henry and Kathryn Brummond; his son, James Bruce; his son-in-law Robert O'Connell; and grandson-in-law, James Randy Shelton. He is survived by daughter Mary Kathryn O'Connell of Midlothian, VA; sons Robert Thomas of Lake Zurich, IL; William Michael (Donna) of Chesterfield, MO; John David of Bellevue, NE; Charles Henry (Patty) of McHenry, IL; 10 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 19th from 11am – 12pm at St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Hutchinson, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will follow directly after at 12pm at the church. Interment will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, MN
